Sydney's mind-blowing 'Light Origami' is a crystal cavern filled with mirrors

Light Origami was part of this year’s bustling Vivid Sydney, an 18-day light and music festival within the beautiful Australian city. Masakazu Shirane’s aim was to create an interactive space that people could ‘design’ or ‘co-create’ for themselves. Shaped as a spiky dome, the magical kaleidoscope structure was illuminated on the outside and placed on the street for the enjoyment of passersby.

Crafted from more than 320 reflective aluminum composite panels, the dome offered an opportunity for visitors to re-imagine their own reality mediated by a sense of wonder. This way they weren’t mere spectators, but became co-creators as they played with the all-around reflections by dancing and dressing brightly for the occasion.

The Light Origami was made in collaboration with producer Reuben Young, who spotted Shirane’s previous work on a fellow weblog.
